WebP beyond excitement
Totally replacing JPEG is impossible in the near future. Five year is what my guess would be to get a decent share in the market.

WebP - The advantages
So, what is WebP bringing to the table?
Alpha Layer

JPEG is opaque. This is attributed to the lack of Alpha Layer. In layman terms, Alpha layer has details about how transparent each pixel is. GIF 24 bit, and PNG has this. Since PNG is lossless, it is inefficient to store pixels in PNG.
