Management Lessons From A Shangai cabbie

Zang Qin, a Shangai cabbie, was at work as usual, driving a cab an indulging in a conversation with his client. However what was unusual was that he was spilling the beans on his business and his client happened to be an executive from Microsoft Run Liu. He shared them on his blog and thereby passing on the knowledge, and also the spotlight to Zang Qin.

The lessons:

  • Value your time (in money). How much a money cost you!
  • Get into your customers shoes. Why should a customer choose you?
  • Choose your customers. 80% are time sink. They return just 20%.
  • Strive for Win-Win. Guide your customers, and take part in costs, so that you both can win.
  • Know your environment. Look for changes in the environment, that affects you and the customers. There are some hidden business opportunity with the changes! And there are some that are lost too!!

The whole story here. Also what happened to our Cabbie after the spotlight.

Man and Machine

Man perhaps invented machine to be the greatest complement to him. What else is so dumb yet so perfect.

Man has always struggled with perfection. It takes so much practice and persistence to achieve perfection. Probably in a life time, man could achieve perfection in one discipline. However machines on the other hand are created for perfection. They make zero mistakes. When ever they have a mechanical hand in it, their perfection co-efficient hovers around one!

The lack of perfection on the upside might be an attributing to man’s intelligence. He owes a lot to it in fact. The ability to make mistakes and learn from it is the reason why we are what we are. However computers are so dumb, that they dont learn. They do the tasks yet they dont learn. Imagine somebody waking up daily and forgetting entirely about what they are, and relying on some instructions to do daily chores such as brushing bathing and stuff like that. That is what computer of yesterday is.

A perfect harmony. However this state of computers and the machine living in this state of harmony is often challenged by man. Man wants to make him more machine like, and also man wants machines more man like!

Do we realise that all the mechanical life that is presented before us makes more machine like. We are pushed to the levels of machine like perfection. Mistakes are not tolerated. We dont feel much for anything. Are we not machine like?

On the other hand there are a set of engineers who are working hard (might be even canning) to make the machines learn. They are trying to give them intelligence, making them err a bit. Making them a more man like! (For the better or the good).

So what would we get out of this experiement! Better Man and Machines, or would the equilibrium swing to the side of the machines! We got to wait and watch! However I personally am saddened by the fact that Man is becoming more of machine that a man!
